by optimizing the composition and process parameters of the treatment liquid, a more uniform and dense conversion film can be formed on the surface of the substrate, enhancing the adhesion between the coating and the substrate, and improving the overall performance of the color-coated coil.

In the colorful world of materials science, color-coated coils are like a shining star. With its unique performance and wide application, it has become the darling of many industries. It is a material that is both beautiful and practical. It is made by applying one or more layers of organic coatings to various metal substrates, such as hot-dip galvanized sheets, hot-dip aluminum-zinc sheets, and electro-galvanized sheets, after a series of fine surface pretreatment processes, including chemical degreasing and chemical conversion treatment, and then carefully coating one or more layers of organic coatings, and curing them in high-temperature baking. Because of its colorful organic coating, it is vividly called color-coated coils.
1. Diverse classification to meet diverse needs
Classification by substrate material
Hot-dip galvanized substrate color-coated coils: Hot-dip galvanized substrates are a very common type of color-coated coils. The production process is to immerse a thin steel plate in a molten zinc tank so that a layer of zinc is firmly adhered to the surface of the steel plate. With the protection of this layer of zinc, the hot-dip galvanized sheet itself has a certain degree of corrosion resistance. When organic coatings are applied on this basis, the zinc layer and the organic coating form a double protection. The organic coating not only isolates the external environment from the erosion of the zinc layer, but also further improves the anti-corrosion performance, making the service life of the hot-dip galvanized substrate color-coated coil about 1.5 times longer than that of the simple hot-dip galvanized sheet. In the construction industry, hot-dip galvanized substrate color-coated coils are widely used in the roofs and walls of industrial plants. They can withstand long-term wind, sun, and rain erosion, providing reliable protection for the plant. The zinc content of the hot-dip galvanized substrate is generally 180g/m² (double-sided), while for the hot-dip galvanized substrate used for building exteriors, in order to cope with more stringent outdoor environments, the galvanizing amount can reach up to 275g/m².
Electro-galvanized substrate color-coated coil: Electro-galvanized substrate color-coated coil is made based on electro-galvanized sheet. Because the zinc layer of the electro-galvanized sheet is relatively thin, the zinc content is usually 20/20g/m², which makes it slightly inferior to the hot-dip galvanized substrate color-coated coil in terms of corrosion resistance, and is not suitable for long-term exposure to harsh outdoor environments for the production of exterior walls, roofs, etc. However, electro-galvanized color-coated coil has its own unique advantages. It has a beautiful appearance, a smooth and delicate surface, and excellent processing performance, and can easily process various complex shapes. Based on these characteristics, it shines in the indoor field. In home appliance manufacturing, it is often used to make the side panels of refrigerators and washing machines, adding a beautiful appearance to home appliances; in the production of audio equipment shells, it can show a delicate texture; in the production of steel furniture, it gives furniture a fashionable shape; in interior decoration, it can be used to make decorative lines, ceilings, etc., to create a warm and comfortable indoor environment.
Hot-dip aluminum-zinc substrate color-coated coil: Hot-dip aluminum-zinc substrate color-coated coil uses hot-dip aluminum-zinc steel plate as the substrate, and its coating composition is about 55% Al, 1.6% Si, and 43.4% Zn by mass. This unique alloy coating gives the color-coated coil excellent corrosion resistance, and its corrosion resistance is 2-5 times that of hot-dip galvanized sheet. Hot-dip galvanized steel sheet also performs very well in terms of high temperature resistance. It will not be seriously oxidized or produce scales even when used continuously or intermittently at temperatures up to 490°C. It also has excellent heat reflection performance, and its ability to reflect heat and light is twice that of hot-dip galvanized steel sheet, with a reflectivity greater than 0.75, which makes it an ideal building material for energy saving. In the field of construction, it is often used on the roofs of large commercial buildings, which can not only effectively resist the erosion of severe weather and extend the service life of the building, but also reduce the energy consumption of indoor air conditioning through good heat reflection performance, and achieve energy saving and environmental protection. In the construction of industrial plants, it is also favored for its excellent performance, providing a reliable enclosure structure for industrial production.
Classification by coating structure
2/1 structural color-coated coil: This type of coating structure color-coated coil is coated twice on the upper surface and once on the lower surface, and is baked twice. Its single-layer back paint is relatively weak in corrosion resistance and scratch resistance, but its adhesion is good. Based on these characteristics, 2/1 structural color-coated coil is mainly used in the production of sandwich panels. Sandwich panels usually consist of two layers of color-coated coils and an insulating core material in the middle. The good adhesion of the 2/1 structural color-coated coil can ensure a firm bond with the core material to form a stable sandwich structure, providing insulation, sound insulation and other functions for the building. In some construction projects that do not require high corrosion resistance and scratch resistance of the back paint, but are more sensitive to cost, such as temporary buildings and simple warehouses, 2/1 structural color-coated coil sandwich panels have been widely used.
2/1m structural color-coated coil: The 2/1m structural color-coated coil is coated twice on the upper and lower surfaces, but only baked once. Its back paint performs well in corrosion resistance, scratch resistance and processing and forming, and also has good adhesion. This comprehensive performance makes it have a wider range of applications, suitable for the production of single-layer profiled panels and sandwich panels. In the application of single-layer profiled sheets, its good corrosion resistance and scratch resistance can ensure that the surface coating of the profiled sheets is not easily damaged during long-term use, maintaining its beauty and protective performance; in the application of sandwich panels, like 2/1 structural color-coated coils, it can be tightly bonded to the core material. In the roof and wall enclosure systems of general industrial plants and commercial buildings, single-layer profiled sheets and sandwich panels made of 2/1m structural color-coated coils are relatively common, providing reliable protection and decorative effects for buildings.
2/2 structural color-coated coils: The 2/2 structural color-coated coils are coated twice on the upper and lower surfaces and baked twice. Its double-layer back paint performs well in corrosion resistance, scratch resistance and processing and forming properties, and is mostly used in the production of single-layer profiled sheets. However, its adhesion is relatively poor and is not suitable for sandwich panels. In some construction projects that require extremely high surface performance of color-coated coils, such as high-end commercial buildings and exterior wall decoration of landmark buildings, single-layer profiled sheets made of 2/2 structural color-coated coils can show excellent weather resistance and aesthetics. After careful design and installation, the profiled board can form a unique architectural appearance and enhance the overall quality and image of the building. Due to its good processing and forming properties, it can meet the needs of various complex architectural shapes and provide strong support for the architect's creative realization.
Classification by coating type
Polyester (PE) color coated coil: Polyester coating is one of the most widely used color coated coils. Polyester color coated coils have good comprehensive performance. It has good adhesion and can be firmly attached to the surface of the substrate and is not easy to fall off. The colors are rich and varied, and various bright and beautiful colors can be formulated according to customer needs to meet different architectural styles and decoration needs. It performs well in terms of forming properties and can be made into products of different shapes through various processing techniques such as stamping and bending. In terms of outdoor durability, although it is not as good as some high-end coating color coated coils, it can also maintain its beauty and protective properties for a long time in general indoor and outdoor environments. It has moderate chemical resistance and can resist the erosion of common chemicals such as acids and alkalis. The cost is relatively low and has a high cost performance. In the field of construction, it is often used for roof and wall decoration of general residential and small commercial buildings; in the home appliance industry, it can be used to make the shell of some low-end home appliances; in furniture manufacturing, it can be used as a decorative material on the surface of furniture to add color and texture to furniture.
Silicone modified polyester (SMP) color coated coil: Silicone modified polyester color coated coil has further improved performance compared with ordinary polyester color coated coil. The coating has good hardness, wear resistance and heat resistance, which makes it perform well in some environments with high material performance requirements. For example, in high temperature environments, it is less likely to change color than ordinary polyester color coated coils and can maintain a stable appearance. In terms of external durability, it has good anti-powdering and gloss retention. Even if it is exposed to the outdoors for a long time and eroded by natural factors such as sunlight, rain, wind and sand, its surface coating is not easy to powder and can maintain a bright gloss for a long time. The flexibility is average. During the processing, it is necessary to pay attention to controlling the processing parameters to avoid problems such as cracking of the coating. The cost is at a medium level. In industrial buildings, such as chemical plants and steel mills, where there are high requirements for the durability and heat resistance of building materials, silicon-modified polyester color-coated coils are widely used in roof and wall enclosure structures; in some public buildings with high requirements for appearance, such as exhibition halls and gymnasiums, silicon-modified polyester color-coated coils are often used to make exterior wall decorative panels, which can not only ensure the beauty of the building, but also ensure that the material performance is stable and reliable during long-term use.
High Weather Resistant Polyester (HDP) Color Coated Coil: High Weather Resistant Polyester Color Coated Coil is known for its excellent weather resistance. It has excellent color retention and UV resistance, and can effectively resist UV radiation and prevent the coating from fading. It has excellent performance in outdoor durability and strong anti-powdering. Even if it is used for a long time in harsh outdoor environments, the surface coating is not easy to powder, and it can always maintain a good appearance and protective performance. The paint film has good adhesion, is closely combined with the substrate, and is not easy to fall off. The colors are rich and varied, which can meet various personalized design needs. The excellent cost performance makes it highly competitive in the market. In some large-scale construction projects with high requirements for building appearance and durability, such as airport terminals and high-speed rail stations, high-weather-resistant polyester color-coated coils are widely used for roof and wall decoration. These buildings are usually located outdoors and face complex climatic conditions and high-intensity use frequency. High-weather-resistant polyester color-coated coils can adapt well to these environments and provide long-lasting protection and aesthetic effects for buildings. In the construction of some high-end residential buildings, high-weather-resistant polyester color-coated coils are also often used to improve the quality and value of residential buildings.
Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) color-coated coil: Polyvinylidene fluoride color-coated coil is a high-end product among color-coated coils. It has excellent color retention and UV resistance. Under long-term sunlight exposure, it will hardly fade and can always maintain bright colors. It performs extremely well in outdoor durability, has strong anti-powdering properties, can withstand the test of harsh natural environments, and has a long service life. It has excellent solvent resistance and can resist the erosion of a variety of organic solvents. Good formability enables it to be made into products of various shapes through various complex processing techniques to meet different design requirements. It also has a certain degree of dirt resistance, the surface is not easily contaminated with dust and stains, and it is relatively easy to clean and maintain. However, due to its high raw material cost and complex production process, its price is relatively expensive. In some iconic buildings with extremely high requirements for building quality and appearance, such as high-end office buildings and luxury hotels, polyvinylidene fluoride color-coated coils are widely used for exterior wall decoration. Its excellent performance can create a high-end, atmospheric, and lasting aesthetic effect for the building, and enhance the overall image and value of the building. In the production of some high-end home appliance shells with strict requirements on product quality and appearance, polyvinylidene fluoride color-coated coils are also used to highlight the high quality and uniqueness of the product.
2. Excellent performance, casting a wide range of applications
Lightweight and beautiful
The density of color-coated coils is similar to that of ordinary steel, but because it usually uses a thinner substrate, the overall weight is relatively light, which has significant advantages in the field of construction. In construction, lightweight color-coated coils are easy to transport and install, which can greatly reduce the difficulty and cost of construction. When building large factories, using color-coated coils as roofing and wall materials can reduce the load on the building structure and reduce the cost of infrastructure construction compared to traditional heavy building materials. At the same time, the rich colors and diverse surface effects of color-coated coils, such as high gloss, matte, wood grain, stone grain, etc., provide a broad creative space for architectural design. Whether it is a modern minimalist commercial building, a cultural venue full of artistic atmosphere, or a warm and comfortable residential area, color-coated coils can perfectly blend with the overall style of the building through their beautiful appearance, adding unique charm to the building. In the bustling commercial district of the city, the exterior walls of the building decorated with colorful color-coated coils can attract people's attention and become a beautiful landscape of the city; in residential areas, the color-coated coils with soft tones create a warm and harmonious living atmosphere.
Excellent anti-corrosion performance
The anti-corrosion performance of color-coated coils comes from its unique structure. Taking the hot-dip galvanized substrate color-coated coil as an example, the galvanized layer is the first line of defense. Zinc reacts with oxygen in the air to form a dense zinc oxide film, which can effectively prevent oxygen and moisture from contacting the substrate, thereby preventing the substrate from rusting. The organic coating applied on the zinc layer forms a second line of defense, further isolating the external corrosive medium and enhancing the anti-corrosion effect. This dual protection mechanism makes the service life of color-coated coils much longer than that of ordinary steel plates. In coastal areas, due to the large amount of salt in the air, it is extremely corrosive to building materials. With its excellent anti-corrosion performance, color-coated coils can maintain a good state in such a harsh environment and provide reliable protection for buildings for a long time. In chemical companies, various corrosive gases and liquids are produced during the production process. Color-coated coils can also effectively resist the erosion of these corrosive media to ensure the safe and stable operation of facilities such as factories.
Good processing performance
Color-coated coils have similar processing performance to galvanized steel plates and can adapt to a variety of processing technologies. It can be made into various complex-shaped parts through stamping processes, such as the shells of home appliances, automotive parts, etc. During the stamping process, the coating of the color-coated coil can remain intact without falling off or cracking, ensuring the quality and appearance of the product. Through the bending process, the color-coated coil can be bent into different curvatures for the design of curved roofs, decorative lines, etc. in buildings. Its good welding performance is also a major advantage. In construction and industrial manufacturing, color-coated coils can be easily welded with other metal materials to form a solid structure. In steel structure buildings, steel beams, steel columns and other components made of color-coated coils can be connected by welding to build a stable building frame. This good processing performance enables color-coated coils to meet the diverse production and design needs of different industries, providing convenience for product manufacturing and building construction.
Good heat reflectivity and thermal insulation
Some color-coated coils, especially hot-dip aluminum-zinc substrate color-coated coils, have good heat reflectivity. The coating on its surface can reflect a large amount of solar radiation heat, reduce the heat absorption inside the building, and thus reduce the energy consumption of indoor air conditioning and other refrigeration equipment. In the hot summer, the indoor temperature of buildings using this color-coated coil as a roofing material can be reduced by 2-5℃ compared to buildings using ordinary roofing materials, effectively saving energy. Some color-coated coils can also be used in combination with thermal insulation materials to form building materials with thermal insulation functions. In sandwich panels, color-coated coils are combined with the insulation core material in the middle as a panel to prevent heat transfer and improve the thermal insulation performance of the building. In the cold winter, this insulation structure can reduce the loss of indoor heat, keep the room warm, and reduce heating costs. Therefore, color-coated coils play an important role in energy conservation and environmental protection, and meet the requirements of modern buildings for green and sustainable development.
3. Innovation-driven, expanding the boundaries of application
Process innovation improves product quality
In the production process of color-coated coils, process innovation continues to promote the improvement of product quality. In terms of surface pretreatment technology, more efficient and environmentally friendly chemical degreasing and chemical conversion treatment methods have been developed. The use of a new type of degreasing agent can quickly and thoroughly remove oil and impurities on the surface of the substrate at low temperatures, while reducing pollution to the environment. In the chemical conversion treatment, by optimizing the composition and process parameters of the treatment liquid, a more uniform and dense conversion film can be formed on the surface of the substrate, enhancing the adhesion between the coating and the substrate, and improving the overall performance of the color-coated coil.
